Last week the mediation community lost one of its cherished members – Tuija Talvitie, Executive Director of Crisis Management Initiative (CMI).
Tuija was a determined peacemaker and a strong believer in the core values of mediation, dialogue and private diplomacy. Over the past decade she has been a fierce advocate and innovator of peacemaking.
“Tuija’s courage and convictions were inspiring and will be sorely missed” said Annika Söder, Chair of the Board, European Institute of Peace, and former Swedish State Secretary for Foreign Affairs. “She was a respected voice and partner for all of those working for a more peaceful and just world”.
Supporting the Institute’s work from the very beginnings, Tuija was a loyal and valued member of its Advisory Council. She spared no effort in encouraging colleagues to persistently “put our best foot forward” when faced with the challenges of an ever-increasing complex world order. Tuija will be dearly missed by all of us who knew and worked with her.
“Peace is too precious to be left to the whims and selfish endeavours of power politics - we need to step in and step up. Build partnerships and alliances; understand our role and strengths within a community of mediation practitioners, understand how we together can add value when we combine our efforts. It’s not just about working together but learning together and shaping new approaches and insights.” ~Tuija Talvitie
